Scientific name: Tolumnia
Sold as a 5cm long plant mounted on wood.
The miniature Tolumnia originated in the Caribbean. These are great compact plants that are easy to grow for any beginner. These plants can often bloom more than once a year.
Light: Tolumnia needs bright, diffused light. Plants that are growing well but reluctant to bloom usually need an increase in light intensity. Once conditioned to high light, tolumnias are fairly tough, but when moving tender plants to a higher light situation, increase their exposure gradually to prevent burning.
Humidity: The Tolumnia enjoys a humidity of 50% to 70%.
Water: Tolumnia prefers distilled, reverse osmosis or Rainwater. Watering should always be done in the morning to insure total evaporation from the leaves by nightfall. Be sure to allow your plants to become totally dry between watering. Drying will be faster outdoors than on a humidity-enhanced windowsill. Damp, cloudy days will retard drying while bright, breezy days will hasten it. Plants on mounts can be misted daily because drying is rapid
Flowering: If you are growing the plants under fluorescent lights, be sure you supply some incandescent light to make up for the end of the light spectrum. This will insure proper blooming. Do not cut the inflorescence after initial flowering. It will often branch and continue with another flush of blooms.
Fertilizer: Fertilizing can be done at every second or third watering with a dilute (1/4- to 1/2-strength) balanced fertilizer. Flushing with plain water between feedings is important because residual salts can damage the roots
Please note that these plants require regular watering. For this reason we only dispatch these orders on a Monday and Tuesday (to areas outside of Cape Town) so that the plants do not risk spending the weekend at the courier depot. Please contact us if you are unsure at email@example.com
